The extent of the opioid addiction and overdose death epidemic in Pennsylvania is appalling, causing at least seven victims to die everyday from drug overdoses. There were over 2500 overdose deaths in Pennsylvania in 2014.
University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study showed that fatal drug overdoses in Pennsylvania increased 14 fold, from 60 million grams – 126 million grams between 1979 and 2014.
Additionally the highest rates of drug overdose deaths were found in counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, those surrounding Philadelphia and in the Northeast near Scranton.
Some estimates are that 80% of current heroin users switched to heroin when prescription opioids became too expensive or too difficult to procure.
In mid February 2016 modern Healthcare took a closer look at the root of the country’s opioid abuse problem and trace it back to 1996 when Purdue Pharma began promoting a new drug to fight pain called Oxycontin. Early on, the medication was billed as being safe because it would slowly release narcotic ingredients, making it unlikely to become addictive.
Nearly Ten Years Later in 2007 Purdue would plead guilty in federal court to criminal charges that they misled regulators, doctors, and patients about the drug’s risk of addiction as well as its potential to be abused.
We need physicians to consider conservative measures first before resorting to prescribing addictive drugs.
Chiropractic has been seen for many years as a suscessful nonpharmalogical way of restoring health. Many chiropractic studies show high effectiveness and patient satisfaction with the lowest malpractice rates among most healthcare practitioners.
More recently, the Ohio State Attorney General filed a lawsuit at the end of May 2017 against the big drug companies allegedly arguing that these companies knew about, advertised and took advantage of addiction as part of their planned marketing of these drugs to create huge profits… knowing that addicts would drive the money coming in.

In the March 15th 2017 article in Time Magazine titled Common Pain Meds are Linked to a Higher Risk of Heart Problems, the author speaks of a new study published in the European Heart Journal - Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy that looked at the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs. It was found that 3376 people who suffered from heart attacks head taking NSAIDs at least 30 days before the event. It was found that by prescribing NSAIDs there was an increase risk of cardiac arrest by 31%.
Even the use of a common drug such as NSAIDs can have major health implications. More conservative measures should be taken before venturing down the path of medication or surgical intervention.
Chiropractic Care is a much more conservative measure to reduce pain. There are numerous studies pointing to the cost effectiveness and safety of Chiropractic Care. One such study from the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics from May 2007 suggest there is a decreased cost and utilization of Medical Services when Chiropractic Care is initiated first. It was demonstrated that there was a decrease of Hospital admissions by 60%, hospital stays by 59% comma and outpatient surgeries and procedures by 62%. It is also notable there was a decrease of in the costs related to the usage of Pharmaceuticals by 85%.
It is worth noting that the study regarding the use of NSAIDs noted the average treatment of 13 to 29 days. The author of the study notes that "previous Studies have observed enhanced cardiovascular risk associated with less than 30 days of treatment with NSAIDs."
So how much is too much? My professional opinion is any amount is too much because everybody responds differently and in fact by taking any pain medication we are not addressing the underlying issue, rather turning off the alarm. However the author of the research article suggest taking no more than 500 milligrams of Naproxen or 1200 milligrams of ibuprofen per day, and also suggested that these drugs should not be sold in supermarkets or convenience stores where there is no professional to advise them on the proper use. But this is a current recommendation by one individual. As has happened with other studies these recommendations can be reversed or changed.
Address the underlying issue first before simply blocking pain. The premise of Chiropractic Care is that the body is a self-healing system. We can observe the body is quite smart in the fact that when in the mother's womb the fetus develops without any assistance from the outside. The fetus only needs to be connected to the mother provide nutrients, oxygen, and to remove waste. However there is what we would describe as an innate intelligence or wisdom that runs the body. Without this life force we would not exist. Doctors of Chiropractic have acknowledge this since our inception. We also recognize that the nervous system is the master controlling system of the body. And it has also been observed through medical research that pressure upon a nerve root exiting the spine may lead to pathology or disease in the body. It is also understood that by reducing the pressure on the nerve root or roots exiting the spine communication is enhanced between brain and body as well as from body to brain.
Doctors of Chiropractic are the only Healthcare professionals trained for the detection and correction all of this spinal nerve root pressure called vertebral subluxation. For help in finding a local licensed Doctor of Chiropractic please feel free to contact our office for guidance.
Again, take conservative measures before more aggressive or risky treatments and utilize a safe and effective method of restoring health -Chiropractic is your answer.
The operating system of a computer is the most important part that allows the computer’s hardware and software to function as one. When the system is compromised by a computer virus, its operations can suffer or even lead to a total crash. Our body, and the systems that keep us working at 100%, can be compared to the operations of a computer. Our muscles and tissues are the hardware, nerve signals are our software, and our nerves are operating system. Just like a computer’s operating system, it is our nervous system that enables our hardware and software to work together as one unit.
The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, spinal nerves, and the peripheral nerve system. The latter consisting of large, long branches of the spinal nerves and numerous narrower and smaller branches of those branches. The brain, as the central hub of the nervous system, starts the impulses that coordinate the activities of all the other body systems. These impulses are sent down specific paths to reach specific targets. These targets – the cells – that comprise the organs and tissues of your respiratory, lymphatic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems, are what allow you to live. The cells operate and then send responses back to the brain by way of the nerve system. These responses consist of reports, requests, and local condition information. The brain interprets this information and responds with further instructions.
It’s simple to understand how the analogy between the brain and the computer came to be. However, it’s up-most important to understand that the brain is definitely not a computer. Regardless of its lightning-quick systems to quickly sort through huge stacks of data, such processing speed and accuracy are not an indication of intelligence. Rather, these computer feats result from the engineers and programmers and are wonderful mechanical accomplishments. Without human designers and programmers, there would be no Operating System in your computer.
In contrast, human consciousness uses the brain of man and woman to arrive at new ways to solve problems. These solutions are emergent, meaning they couldn’t be figured out by analyzing the information. Computers are not capable of emergent behavior. Therefore, our innate intelligence not only guides our bodies, but also guides us in our choices, decisions, and world interactions.
If you think of yourself as a living organism, your body most likely includes physiological systems, organs, tissues, and cells. From a functional perspective, your physiological systems are all interconnected. The parts of these systems continually communicate with each other, exchanging information regarding status, available resources, and needs. The system that manages these ongoing communications is the nervous system, your body’s master system. This system, via a multitude of nerves, branches, and local connections, link your brain and spinal cord with every other part of your body. But static on the nerves can interrupt optimal communication within this complex system, causing transmission of very important information to be altered so that interpretation of these signals are compromised. This may result in pain, symptoms, and, ultimately, disease. Chiropractic care helps detect and correct spinal misalignments, the most common sources of nerve interference. Regular chiropractic care helps restore optimal function and helps us improve levels of healing, movement, and well-being.
Motor vehicle or Car accidents can have long-term effects on your spinal health if not taken care of from the onset. If you notice pain or tension in your head, neck, or back following an accident, you should consider calling our office for a comprehensive examination. We have been taking care of people of all ages since 1998 and have helped many restore their heath after a car accident. This would also include motorcycle accidents, bike accidents, truck accidents and even boat or water skiing accidents.
Watch the video below for further explanation about how the impact from a motor vehicle accident can affect you.
Often I am asked is there a stress on my spine and nervous system how come I don’t feel it? The answer to that is because only approximately 10% of the nerve fibers in your body are designed for the perception of pain. But that does not make it any less easy in understanding what type of self-care or self check one can do to learn a little bit more about the nature of the stress on one’s spine and nervous system.
When I was in chiropractic school we used to joke about the idea saying “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a button or an indicator on one’s forehead that said tilt” to alert a person when they look in the mirror in the morning that they have spinal tension or what we call vertebral subluxation. What we need is some form of telemetry, an indicator to us on the outside of what’s happening on the inside. We do have scanning technology in our office called the Insight millennium which does assess the spine and nervous system for various forms of stress that can result in ill health. However that is not something one can use at home or when out of the office. There are certain forms of biofeedback to use so one can evaluate their spine to look at a few specific markers. I went over that on a previous blog called the DIY Spinal Exam
Think about it, if there was a spaceship that NASA was sending into space it would have mechanisms of assessing on the ground. I’m sure that NASCAR has the same thing for their cars to make sure they are functioning properly. It is impractical to have something like that so I said fine that would be hooked up to one’s body as there are to machines.
So the short of it is that you should look at your range of motion. Turn your head left and right, laterally flex your head left and right, and flex your head forward and back. If you feel any stress or discomfort even slight tension on one side versus the other you may be in need of a spinal evaluation. This really mean that you will need to be adjusted. However it is one component to evaluation that we might do and if you do feel discomfort I would urge you to have your spine checked by a license chiropractor.
In fact if you want to help friend or family member you can do this assessment with them where you can visually see possibly the deficiency movement. This also can be done for the low back by bending forward, backwards, and side to side.
If you have any questions on how to do this please feel free to respond to this blog or to contact me directly at 610-935-5900.
A team of researchers from John Hopkins University reviews prior health records nearly 190,000 patients. These patients presenting 2 over 1000 Emergency Departments between the years 2008 and 2009. What was reported is that the combination of headache and dizziness – especially in women minorities, and young patients – was a potential of an impending stroke.
They had reported that almost 13% of the people complaining of headaches and dizziness or later admitted for stroke and had been misdiagnosed and inappropriately sent home from the emergency department within the previous 30 days. Patients were told that they had a condition such as an inner ear infection or migraine, and in some cases they weren’t given a diagnosis at all. Slightly less than half of the people had a stroke within 7 days and more than half had a stroke Within 48 hours all the initial pre stroke emergency department visit.
The study reported that women were 33% and minorities approximately 25% more likely to be misdiagnosed, suggesting gender and racial issues may play a role. The researchers estimate that Physicians Miss 15,000 265,000 strokes that may result in harm to patients each year.
Many people visit health care providers with headaches and dizziness with no relationship to stroke comma though it is sometimes not possible to know whether a potentially dangerous problem may arise in the near future. The good news is that it is usually not the case.
Doctors of Chiropractic commonly see patients presenting with headaches and dizziness. When this occurs suddenly, out of the ordinary, and we’re at a relatively young age, it is better to be safe than sorry and a pain multiple opinions, especially when in doubt.
What we do know however is that the incidence stroke relationship to Chiropractic Care is very low based upon more recent studies. A good predictor of any Healthcare professions risk in the treatment methods is to look at malpractice insurance rates. Chiropractic Care is extremely safe with minimal risk involved and can be verified by looking at the national average for malpractice insurance rates for chiropractors.
At Snyder Family Chiropractic it is my duty to make sure that I first do no harm. My training allows me to discern weather treatment is appropriate or not and if not where to refer the patient if necessary.
Know that you are in good hands. If you suffer from headaches, dizziness, or both, yours may be a chiropractic case.
Winners use chiropractic to be the best they can be. Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man won the gold medal in the 100-meter during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Bolt was quoted as saying “I worked hard over the years. I’ve been injured and I’ve worked hard through it, and I’ve made it.” what uses Chiropractic not only to bounce back more quickly from injuries, but also to enhance his performance while healthy. “As long as I’m in great shape, nobody beats me, for sure.”
In July 2016 I was in a radio interview on New Hampshire radio station 107.7 “The Pulse” WTPL-FM (www.wtplfm.com) by former Ms. America (2014-15), Dr. Stephanie Mills who is also a doctor of chiropractic. Dr. Mills, Clinic Director at Crossroads Chiropractic in New Hampshire, and I spoke on a myriad of topics which I believe you will find very interesting. So sit back and enjoy a Half Hour of Health.
Tonight is the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, and all the talk is about one man breaking records in track and Field.
The fastest man who has ever lived is entering his last Olympics. His goal is to win three more medals. He has never lost a 100 meter final at the Olympics or world Championships. This consistency is amazing given the extreme demands of his sport. What’s his secret?
He sees a #chiropractor to make sure everything is in alignment before he blasts off the line. In interviews he reports a history of scoliosis (or curvature of the spine). With chiropractic, proper training and an intense desire to win he has dominated a very competitive sport for years. Usain Bolt says “When I was younger, the #scoliosis wasn’t really a problem. But you grow and it gets worse. My spine was really curved bad. The early part of my career, when we didn’t really know much about it, it really hampered me because I got injured every year. I’ve worked hard over the years. I’ve been injured and I’ve worked hard through it, and I’ve made it. As long as I’m in great shape, nobody beats me, for sure.”
Sprinters get injured frequently. Because of the ballistic forces involved in their sport, they tear muscles and tend to wrench their spines out of place. It’s a young man’s sport. Good sprinters may last a year or two before they reach their peak and leave sprinting forever. Mr. Bolt is almost 30. He’s heading for his last Olympics. He’s beating the odds and competing at the highest levels with chiropractic!
If your “track record” is not as good as Mr. Bolt’s, or you’d just like to be and stay healthy, call your family chiropractor and schedule a wellness checkup. www.SnyderFamilyChiro.com
