vertigo and dizziness
A team of researchers from John Hopkins University reviews prior health records nearly 190,000 patients. These patients presenting 2 over 1000 Emergency Departments between the years 2008 and 2009. What was reported is that the combination of headache and dizziness – especially in women minorities, and young patients – was a potential of an impending stroke.
They had reported that almost 13% of the people complaining of headaches and dizziness or later admitted for stroke and had been misdiagnosed and inappropriately sent home from the emergency department within the previous 30 days. Patients were told that they had a condition such as an inner ear infection or migraine, and in some cases they weren’t given a diagnosis at all. Slightly less than half of the people had a stroke within 7 days and more than half had a stroke Within 48 hours all the initial pre stroke emergency department visit.
The study reported that women were 33% and minorities approximately 25% more likely to be misdiagnosed, suggesting gender and racial issues may play a role. The researchers estimate that Physicians Miss 15,000 265,000 strokes that may result in harm to patients each year.
Many people visit health care providers with headaches and dizziness with no relationship to stroke comma though it is sometimes not possible to know whether a potentially dangerous problem may arise in the near future. The good news is that it is usually not the case.
Doctors of Chiropractic commonly see patients presenting with headaches and dizziness. When this occurs suddenly, out of the ordinary, and we’re at a relatively young age, it is better to be safe than sorry and a pain multiple opinions, especially when in doubt.
What we do know however is that the incidence stroke relationship to Chiropractic Care is very low based upon more recent studies. A good predictor of any Healthcare professions risk in the treatment methods is to look at malpractice insurance rates. Chiropractic Care is extremely safe with minimal risk involved and can be verified by looking at the national average for malpractice insurance rates for chiropractors.
At Snyder Family Chiropractic it is my duty to make sure that I first do no harm. My training allows me to discern weather treatment is appropriate or not and if not where to refer the patient if necessary.
Know that you are in good hands. If you suffer from headaches, dizziness, or both, yours may be a chiropractic case.
I am finding that more and more patients are coming in with vertigo and dizziness. Did you know almost half the cases of vertigo have no known medical cause, which means many vertigo patients often go searching for answers outside of prescription medications. Some vertigo patients have even found resolution to their vertigo after correcting an imbalance to their head and neck alignment through upper cervical chiropractic care.
So what causes vertigo?
When a trauma occurs to the body, such as a car accident, blow to the head, or fall, it often affects the first neck bone or C1, because of the unique role and shape this bone has: it is a coupling mechanism between the head and the neck.
The body will quickly adapt to an uncontrolled force into the head and neck by locking this joint down to protect the highly sensitive anatomy inside the top of the spine: the lower part of the brain stem and the beginning of the spinal cord. Unfortunately this temporary trauma moves the atlas bone (C1) into a position that disrupts and even chokes the nerve signals from the brain. If the congestion at the bottom of the brain and the top of the neck affects the nerves that communicate with the inner ear, then vertigo-like symptoms can be the result.
By reducing the amount of pressure on the brain stem the nervous system is able to function more efficiently. The nervous system controls postural tone, spatial orientation, and coordination between movements in the body-and when these systems are not working correctly vertigo can result. The chiropractor allows the body the chance to naturally reduce vertigo symptoms by correcting the cause-the confused communication between the brain and the body.
