A team of researchers from John Hopkins University reviews prior health records nearly 190,000 patients.  These patients presenting 2 over 1000 Emergency Departments between the years 2008 and 2009. What was reported is that the combination of headache and dizziness – especially in women  minorities, and young patients – was a potential of an impending stroke.

They had reported that almost 13% of the people complaining of headaches and dizziness or later admitted for stroke and had been misdiagnosed and inappropriately sent home from the emergency department within the previous 30 days. Patients were told that they had a condition such as an inner ear infection or migraine, and in some cases they weren’t given a diagnosis at all. Slightly less than half of the people had a stroke within 7 days and more than half had a stroke Within 48 hours all the initial pre stroke emergency department visit.

The study reported that women were 33% and minorities approximately 25% more likely to be misdiagnosed, suggesting gender and racial issues may play a role. The researchers estimate that Physicians Miss 15,000 265,000 strokes that may result in harm to patients each year.

Many people visit health care providers with headaches and dizziness with no relationship to stroke comma though it is sometimes not possible to know whether a potentially dangerous problem may arise in the near future. The good news is that it is usually not the case.

Doctors of Chiropractic commonly see patients presenting with headaches and dizziness. When this occurs suddenly, out of the ordinary, and we’re at a relatively young age, it is better to be safe than sorry and a pain multiple opinions, especially when in doubt.

What we do know however is that the incidence stroke relationship to Chiropractic Care is very low based upon more recent studies.
