How Your Morning Routine Affects Your Spine

Newsletter – Snyder Family Chiropractic
Your morning routine sets the mood for your entire day — including how your spine feels. The choices you make in the first few minutes after waking could either help your back or contribute to stiffness, discomfort, and spinal nerve dysfunction. The good news is it’s never too late to build spine‑friendly habits.

What Happens to Your Spine Overnight?

While you sleep, your spinal discs absorb fluid and become slightly fuller. These discs act as natural shock absorbers between the vertebrae, helping your spine stay flexible and protected.
But plumper discs can also create morning stiffness and increase tension on ligaments. Combine that with lying still for 7–9 hours, and it’s easy to understand why muscles and joints feel tight when you first get out of bed.

7 Morning Habits That Can Ruin Your Day

. Getting Out of Bed Immediately

Springing into an upright position after your alarm rings is able to strain tight muscles, joints, and ligaments. Instead, warm‑up your body:
  • Sit up slowly, using your hands for support
  • Roll your neck from side to side
  • Rotate your ankles

1. Not Drinking Enough Water

As you move throughout the day, your spinal discs gradually lose some of the fluid they absorbed overnight. Drinking water in the morning helps rehydrate these discs and supports spinal comfort.

2. Checking Your Phone First Thing

If your phone is the first thing you reach for, your neck may pay the price. Most people bend their heads forward to look at their screens, dramatically increasing stress on the neck and upper back.
Over time, this can lead to text neck, which may cause:
  • Neck and upper back pain
  • Headaches
  • Stiffness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms and hands
Hold your phone at eye level to reduce strain.

3. Skipping Morning Stretching

Tight tissues are more likely to become strained or irritated. Just five minutes of gentle stretching can make a big difference.
Try:
  • Bringing your knees to your chest while lying on your back
  • Cat‑cow motion (arch your back like a cat, then drop your spine and lift your head like a cow)
Avoid vigorous or high‑impact movements first thing in the morning.

4. Poor Posture During Your Routine

Even everyday tasks like brushing your teeth is able to strain your spine if you bend your neck or hunch your back. Rather, bend forward from your hips, keeping your spine neutral.

5. Morning Stress

Thinking about your task list before you’re out of bed can increase muscle tension. Stress tightens soft tissues and can worsen back pain.
Try:
  • Deep breathing
  • A short meditation
  • A period of silence before beginning your day

6. Ignoring Morning Stiffness

Pushing through stiffness doesn’t make it disappear — it often makes it worse. A warm shower can loosen tight muscles and improve mobility. If you shower at night, use a heating pad for a few minutes before beginning your day.

When a Spine‑Friendly Routine Isn’t Enough

If you’re still experiencing back pain despite good habits, you may be dealing with spinal nerve dysfunction — a misalignment of the vertebrae that increases tension on nerves, muscles, and soft tissues.
Chiropractic care at Snyder Family Chiropractic can help:
  • Improve alignment
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Ease stiffness
