Active Release Technique (ART)

Active Release Technique, or ART, is a specialized, hands-on therapy designed to treat soft tissue injuries and restrictions. It focuses on muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves that have become tight, scarred, or restricted due to overuse, injury, or poor movement patterns.

Unlike traditional massage, ART combines precise tension with guided movement. By applying pressure while you actively move the affected muscle or joint, ART breaks up adhesions, restores normal motion, and reduces pain.

Common signs that ART may help include:

  • Chronic or acute muscle pain

  • Stiffness or limited range of motion

  • Numbness or tingling caused by compressed nerves

  • Pain after repetitive movements, like typing, lifting, or sports activity

  • Reduced performance or difficulty with daily movements

ART is commonly used for conditions such as tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, back and neck pain, sciatica, and shoulder or hip restrictions. Over time, scar tissue and adhesions can limit movement and create pain; ART works to release these restrictions so muscles and joints can move freely again.

A chiropractic or therapeutic approach often combines ART with stretching, strengthening exercises, and postural guidance to prevent future restrictions. By addressing both the soft tissues and overall movement patterns, ART can help reduce pain, restore function, and improve overall physical performance.
