Let’s clear something up right away: Degenerative Disc Disease sounds scary, but it’s not a disease in the way most people think of one. It’s actually a very common condition that happens as we age.
Between each vertebra in your spine, you have soft discs that act like little cushions. Over time, those discs can wear down, flatten, or dry out. That’s called disc degeneration. When it starts causing pain or stiffness, we call it Degenerative Disc Disease.
This is incredibly common in people over 40, but it can also show up earlier—especially if you’ve had injuries, a very physically demanding job, or long-standing posture issues. Symptoms might include:
- Chronic lower back pain
- Pain that gets worse when you sit, twist, or lift
- Occasional numbness or tingling in your arms or legs
The good news is that even though the disc itself can’t regrow, we can often help reduce the symptoms and slow the progression. Chiropractic care focuses on improving the movement and alignment of your spine, taking pressure off the affected discs and helping the surrounding muscles and joints work better together.
You don’t have to live in fear of degeneration. With the right care and lifestyle adjustments, you can still move well and feel good for years to come.
